Cut out the cost on a caravan holiday
Let’s face it, everyone is cutting back these days. Post recession no-one hasn’t felt the financial repercussions. And that’s why caravanning and campervan holidays are so popular right now.
But it’s still possible to spend a lot of money during your trip if you don’t know what you’re doing. That’s why we’ve listed some of the things you should think about if you don’t want an empty wallet or purse at the end of your stay.
- Try and resist spending on meals out. Sure treat yourself now and again. You are on holiday after all! But don’t overdo it. Caravans and great for indoor cooking and if you plan your meals and buy in bulk from the supermarket beforehand you’ll be able to avoid the expensive on-site mini market.
- Use a GPS. Losing your way on your trip to an unfamiliar place could cost you heavily in fuel terms. It may be an initial outlay but it will be worth it in the long run, especially if you’re travelling abroad where it’s far easier to lose your way.
Even in Britain on familiar roads, you’re bound to run into unfamiliar roadwork’s which will divert you onto routes you hadn’t planned to take. Again, a GPS will come in handy here. It’ll also save you rowing with the other half about their map reading skills!
- Try and reduce the weight of your caravan or campervan. For instance, do you really need a full tank of water?
- increase the van’s tyre pressure – this will lessen the cost of fuel.
- Try and stick to a speed of between 55 and 60 mph. For every five mph over 60 mph you’ll lose at least 10 per cent of your fuel economy. Over long distances – especially on a touring holiday – that can be add up to quite a bit.
- Fill your van with petrol at night as those-in-the-know say you get more for your cash at lower temperatures. Fuel, when fresh – rather than sitting stagnant in the pump for days – is also more efficient.
- Keep your mileage low. Some insurance companies will give discounts if your mileage tally is lower than average.
- Never leave the engine in your van idling which stopped for a cuppa. The same applies to the air conditioning when not in use.
- Also keep your vehicle clean and serviced. A poorly tuned engine can use unnecessary petrol – as much as 20 per cent extra. Poor emission control can, in some cases, lead to up to 40 per cent fuel waste.
Of course, another way to save money is entertainment-wise. Don’t go for costly cinema or theme park outings. There are hundreds of activities to get involved in within the British Isles that are free or cost very little such as rock climbing, bird watching, fishing, hiking, hiring a rowing boat, nature walking and cycling.
Many museums and visitor attractions also have free entry while a game of swing ball or rounders with other kids on the caravan site won’t cost you a penny – unless the ball goes through a window that is!
